Let's get started...

Welcome to the BCS Playoff System proposal page. This area is devoted to exploring all the different avenues for a BCS Playoff System. We all know the story: Everyone is sick and tired of the current BCS format and its opinionated, politically charged, red-tape filled popularity contest year-in/year-out. Every year, however, all the "Officials" always seem to have a veritable cornucopia of excuses and/or reasons for why we shouldn't/cannot pursue any route down this avenue. Mainly, one word seems to ring home in every retort: "Money" ... What exactly do they mean by that? Wouldn't a playoff system potentially add more money by including better match-up's, and a few extra weeks of the College Football games we all love so dearly? The convoluted, ever-evolving explanations seem to get more ridiculous each year, and people grow ever-more hungry when their deserving team inevitably gets "snubbed" for one reason or another.

On this page there is currently only one proposed system. An eight-team BCS Playoff System based on the current BCS format, using the top eight teams of the FINAL BCS Rankings of the season. Since there is only one system described in detail here, this is where you come in. The Forum link at the top of this and every page on this site is a place where you, the ever-loyal equality seeking fan can explain your own ideas. If your idea works well enough and gets enough support/responses, it could even be posted on this page, diagram and all, along with the others. Voting polls will be added to pit each proposition against one another to identify which are the most popular. Maybe this will get some attention since this will provide everyone a centralized place to discuss this important matter, with the main goal being to offer feasibility analysis for each proposition, any type of opinions, and a vote on their popularity against other ideas.

Anyway, I do believe this eight-team playoff system could work with some minor tweaking, of course. I think the way to get started in this direction is to keep the format as simple as possible, meaning not change too much right off the bat. It always seems best to get your foot in the door by providing a solid idea to get the ball rolling without trying to reinvent/re-vamp a major portion of the existing system. While it may not be perfect at first, at least it will be the first MAJOR step in the right direction. We aren't going to be asking much, as the current BCS/Poll system for ranking teams will still be in place, all of the current BCS and non-BCS bowls will still exist, and the BCS National Championship Game will still decide our College Football National Champion and be rotated among each BCS game location every year. The only thing that needs to change here is that two Bowls will either need to be added, or reallocated from existing Bowl games to fill out the Semi-Final portion of playoff bracket shown in the diagram/bracket pictured below. This idea will of course need feedback. See What Bowls should fill out the eight-team playoff bracket? forum thread for this discussion. Keep in mind that all inquiries will be open for debate there.

Ideas for the intial, "What Bowls should fill out the eight-team playoff bracket?" Forum Discussion

  • Whether all four original BCS Bowls be distributed amongst the first round of the playoff, or be rotated throughout the bracket levels from year to year?
  • Should the two new BCS Playoff System Bowls be converted existing Bowls (There would be two completely new Bowls created to take their place amongst the other, non-BCS Playoff Bowl games), or two newly created Bowls specific to the BCS Playoff System Bracket?
  • What bracket levels should the new, or converted BCS Playoff Bowls be placed amongst the others in the BCS Playoff System bracket?
  • If we use converted/reallocated Bowl games, should they be chosen based on their prestige, which would be measured by their payout and/or popularity?
  • Considering that the states of California, Arizona, Florida, and Louisiana already have BCS Bowls, should other states take precedence when determining the location for the other two BCS Playoff Bowls?
  • The logistics of transporting each team to the BCS Playoff Bowl games must be considered, and geographically organized where/whenever possible. This may be tough at times, but can feasibly be well thought out in certain, obvious situations.
  • Even though BCS Playoff game dates have been proposed in the diagram/bracket pictured above, are these the best dates, or could they be tweaked? (Remember that the playoffs should start no earlier than the end of the academic semester because of the student-athletes obligation to finish out their classes/finals.)
  • TV scheduling should be of major significance considering the potential for conflict with other, non-BCS Bowl games.
